The Best Way To Clean Gutters
I get asked this question quite often, especially in the Fall when the leaves start falling. “What is the best way to clean gutters?” So I’m going to let you in on some of my home maintenance tips for cleaning gutters.
Some of the confusion comes from landscapers, power washing companies and other handymen running around handing out flyers saying they will clean your gutters for little or nothing. They like to sell you on their pressure washing services. Some time pressure washers will throw in a “free gutter cleaning” when you choose one of their other services.

Now that we have that clear, here’s another Never – Ever
NEVER, EVER CLEAN SHINGLES WITH A PRESSURE WASHER!!!
Okay, now are you ready to learn the best way to clean your gutters?
It’s very simple, but requires some elbow grease. You clean your gutters with a trowel or other small bladed tool that will fit in the bottom of the gutter and you scoop out all the crap that is in there. Once you’re done doing that, next take your garden hose with a pressure nozzle that you can turn on and off easily. Wash out the rest of the crud down to the downspout.
The problem with power washing your gutters is that everything around gets blasted with debris. And let me tell you, there aren’t too many pressure washing companies who wil clean that crap up!!!
Also, high pressure can damage gutter seams and cause leaks, not to mention that high pressure water can get into homes if the siding isn’t 100%!
Yeah, it’s a lot of work, but scooping and washing your gutters out afterward with a garden hose is the best way to clean gutters that won’t cause you a problem down the road!
